This is the problem with choosing a voice for my long-languishing software modernization book. It's probably more salable if written in a Wiley/CRC Press textbook style but it's way more interesting and readable (and writable!) if I use phrases like "beset by the undead"
I think you should throw out salable as a criterion, and write the thing you want (and the one we'd love to read!).

'Salable' is like 'electable'; you're bound to lose if you use that as a dominant criterion or goal - you will create something that nobody is enthusiastic about. My main question is whether there's enough interest to warrant even attempting this.
