One thing I don't understand about American politics is why we need 18 months of presidentical campaign. Start the campaigning season on Independence Day (very patriotic!), nominate at the end of August, and that leaves two months of general campaign. Still a lot, but far better.

I had thought of that too. But we’ve all seen how effective norms are. The incentives for each party/candidate would be all on the side of pushing the line further and further back, not on upholding the norm

The same political norms hold the general election to the period after the political conventions right now. I don't think it's easy to set up such a system, but it might be possible
