These technologies do not even work in the test domain. But China is deploying them in the most adversarial environment possible, a society accustomed to survival in a totalitarian state. And all our existing AI is exquisitely vulnerable to adversarial inputs.

Unfortunately all of the skepticism that journalists have learned to apply to Silicon Valley claims of socially transformative technology get thrown out when China watchers make similar claims about whatever app it made its population download that particular week

I recall when the first digital cameras came out decades ago and photography magazines declared that digital could never match the quality of film. Maybe China's snake oil tech doesn't work now, but with enough money and time it might. Worrisome that they are even trying it.
