Sometimes I talk about fan fiction to new friends who ask me what I do for a living. The conversation goes one of two ways: either they've never heard of fanfic and are amazed, or they clearly write volumes of the stuff and we both try to pretend they've never heard of it.

There's nothing shameful about writing fanfic, but it is quite personal, so not really something you want to out people for before they're ready to tell you. But heping people garden their collection is also an interesting way to earn a living! My small talk is a mine field.

This talk explains my relationship with fanfic. My site is a delicious clone and many fans jumped ship to it after the new owners of delicious broke some important search features: https://idlewords.com/talks/fan_is_a_tool_using_animal.htm …
