Sometimes I talk about fan fiction to new friends who ask me what I do for a living. The conversation goes one of two ways: either they've never heard of fanfic and are amazed, or they clearly write volumes of the stuff and we both try to pretend they've never heard of it.

There's nothing shameful about writing fanfic, but it is quite personal, so not really something you want to out people for before they're ready to tell you. But heping people garden their collection is also an interesting way to earn a living! My small talk is a mine field.

It is difficult for me to answer the question "what is your job" without asking invasive questions about people's tech use, to figure out what flavor of explanation makes sense to them. It makes me sound shifty. And then there's the bedbug site... Why yes, I have trouble renting.
