For my part, I'm not talking about a Cantonese translation. Couldn't the New Yorker have simply mechanically converted the translation to traditional characters and offered that as an option. I'm pointing it out as a weird editorial choice, knowing that most peope can read it

It’s not purely mechanical, if you want to keep the translation idiomatic. For some words (esp jargon), you’ll need manual review because you might use slightly different trad characters. So lot of mainlanders won’t write traditional even though it’s readable

But it’d have been a cheap translation, so definitely a bit weird. I’d think it’s mostly them just ramping up their Chinese language offerings (thinking about translated research reports in industry), but it’d be nice to get an insider’s perspective.
