Something I don't understand: in recent days, Hong Kong police claim to have found two huge bombs and captured a crew red-handed practicing how to fly exploding drones around. But they let a rally go forward today with many thousands of pro-police supporters, with no bag checks

My conclusion is that the police know there is no credible threat to the public from the gang of gun-toting, drone-flying bombmakers they claim to have been rounding up over the last two weeks. Either that, or they're very confident they got everyone!

As
@lazyyyyyyyy points out, there was another parallel universe bomb story in Hong Kong in July, with two kilos of TATP, a notoriously dangerous peroxide explosive, being seized in a "bomb lab".https://twitter.com/Lazyyyyyyy/status/1206350484291895297 …Show this thread -
For non-chemistry people, making KILOGRAM quantities of anything in a home lab on what is apparently your first try, would be enough to raise eyebrows. If that 'something' is an unstable peroxide explosive, your eyebrows climb to the top of your head and stay there.

It's like never having cooked and then reading a recipe and successfully making ten chocolate souffles in a row, except if you screw one up it explodes your apartment.

Here's a humorous and informative article by a working chemist about why you should talk to your roomates before synthesizing large amounts of TATP at home (and why the Hong Kong police claims are so hard to believe)https://blogs.sciencemag.org/pipeline/archives/2017/02/16/how-not-to-do-it-tatp …
