I never understood the point of comments along the lines of "people should have seen this coming". Some did, some didn't. But what does that matter for right now?

The people who didn’t / couldn’t see are elevated to positions in which they’re supposed to see, & their credulity screws things up for the rest of us! And the same qualities that keep them from seeing make them very useful to the very worst people.

What you’re asking is along the lines of, what does it matter if credulous, unthinking, careerist people are in charge of things, or if they have more wealth and power than people who aren’t as rudderless. It matters a lot!
