This is wrong. So many of these people were first-timers, coming in through groups like Indivisible. My experience of what cut the legs out from under the resistance movement were court cases (which looked like victories!) that nullified the travel ban.https://twitter.com/mtracey/status/1205880686961418241 …

Because the so-called "mass resistance" of 2016-2017 was led by liberal elites aligned with the institutional Democratic Party and therefore unsustainable/fake https://twitter.com/drvox/status/1205536004871983104 …

Another thing that hurt was the implosion of the Women's March. And finally, the fact that Trump didn't immediately nuke half the world and tank the economy also had an impact. People get used to stuff, and that removed urgency (and discredited a lot of us cassandras)

But all that aside, the idea that the resistance movement wasn't "authentic" because the opposition party tried to make use of it and help organize it is not just silly, but harmful. Lots of great people got into political activity for the first time through this work

my sad belief is that if the economy had been worse there would have been lots more overt dissent and protest, including on issues like kids at the border and impeachment, and we'd be talking about "the conscience of a nation" rising up in moral outrage. But the conscience rests

But I think anyone who got involved in resistance stuff in late 2016/2017 can attest that it was not liberal elites, but people from all walks of life coming together in a sense of shared emergency, and finding comfort in that attempt to do something

The institutional Democratic party everyne maligns so much did a good job converting that energy into a large midterm victory and I think gets unfairly maligned (including by me in the past, a lot)

Speaking for the tech world I know, a lot of the stuff that we were so scared of in late 2016 ended up happening in 2019 (deportations, facial recognition, tech government contracts, war on encryption) but with a fatal lull in enthusiasm and appetite for organizing in between

Anyone paying attention should’ve been scared of these things around, like, 2010. Earlier. By 2010 Zuckerberg was already preening about throwing millions at consultants meant to undemocratically remake Newark schools, just bc he was mega-rich off a repulsive business model.

I never understood the point of comments along the lines of "people should have seen this coming". Some did, some didn't. But what does that matter for right now?

The people who didn’t / couldn’t see are elevated to positions in which they’re supposed to see, & their credulity screws things up for the rest of us! And the same qualities that keep them from seeing make them very useful to the very worst people.

What you’re asking is along the lines of, what does it matter if credulous, unthinking, careerist people are in charge of things, or if they have more wealth and power than people who aren’t as rudderless. It matters a lot!

I won’t keep banging on about this, but want to clarify it’s not just tech—much of the media industry was, broadly speaking, self-harming by not seeing what was happening around 2012 for what it was.https://dangerousminds.net/comments/facebook_i_want_my_friends_back …
