Another thing that hurt was the implosion of the Women's March. And finally, the fact that Trump didn't immediately nuke half the world and tank the economy also had an impact. People get used to stuff, and that removed urgency (and discredited a lot of us cassandras)

But all that aside, the idea that the resistance movement wasn't "authentic" because the opposition party tried to make use of it and help organize it is not just silly, but harmful. Lots of great people got into political activity for the first time through this work

my sad belief is that if the economy had been worse there would have been lots more overt dissent and protest, including on issues like kids at the border and impeachment, and we'd be talking about "the conscience of a nation" rising up in moral outrage. But the conscience rests

But I think anyone who got involved in resistance stuff in late 2016/2017 can attest that it was not liberal elites, but people from all walks of life coming together in a sense of shared emergency, and finding comfort in that attempt to do something

The institutional Democratic party everyne maligns so much did a good job converting that energy into a large midterm victory and I think gets unfairly maligned (including by me in the past, a lot)

Speaking for the tech world I know, a lot of the stuff that we were so scared of in late 2016 ended up happening in 2019 (deportations, facial recognition, tech government contracts, war on encryption) but with a fatal lull in enthusiasm and appetite for organizing in between

One of the things that I saw from that movement was a problem with learned impotence. They fanatically believed that Muller would bring Trump to justice, but there wasn't anything that they could do to help that, so when that didn't happen, the movement just sort of dissolved.
