All fair points. If we take a broader look at western democracies, I would try and argue the opposite - as voters has become less involved in governance, they become easier victims for false narratives (brexit v1). I try to push for more direct involvement by citizens..

I very much agree with you there, too, and have no idea what the right answer is. I do worry that in a polarized climate, activist capture of party leadership becomes an issue, but you also don't want to lock people out of involvement in the political process at the grassroots

I think both parties are longing for the return of selecting a candidate in a smoke filled room. It's not like the GOP is thrilled with Trump either; they have just concluded there's no alternative to putting up with him.
