So why did they want Tories to win?

Probably for the same reason that a good amount of very rich people vote for people who will raise their taxes and actually make them worse off: because they would rather have those people in power. It's not complicated! Loads of people vote "against their own interest".

Damn if only there was some sort of science or study devoted to studying the mechanisms of political and economic power and how that power can be used to influence people's behavior, including voting.
