The problem is even worse for the senate, where senility is rampant and it is now the accepted practice (rather than a shameful display of vanity) to cap one's career by dying of old age in office.

You might say the answer is because voters can choose if advanced age should be disqualifying. But how do they get to make that choice in a Trump vs. Biden or Trump vs. Sanders or Trump vs. Warren or Trump vs. Bloomberg general election?

i don’t think it’s weird. dementia is a medical condition and they probably open themselves up to suit by saying a public figure has a medical condition they’ve not been diagnosed with. then there’s the ick involved with journalists attempting medical diagnoses.
