A person I know created his own system using Yale syllables and tone marks (no "h" insertion): 1: over bar 2: acute 3: (nothing) 4: grave, underneath. 5: acute, underneath. 6: under bar This has the issue that "y" is a vowel in Yale and it has a descender.
I prefer the diacritic matching the tone shape, but fair point that arbitrary diacritics would be fine.
