The problem isn’t about “squish”. It’s that there’s a difference between business reasoning and technical reasoning. The only person up there who carries the credentials to offer testimony about technical reasoning is Matt. And he has a very specific opinion on this.

Not to mention that his technical position is at odds with the *majority* of the technical community. So much so that his Lawfare post was one of only three proposals that William Barr has cited as evidence that exceptional access is possible.

And it’s a frigging Lawfare post. Which should concern you.

So please correct me if am not seeing some nuance(s) here that I ought to... but whatever I have read about this topic thus far that even hints at the possibility of successful exceptional access is premised on enough preconditions/hypotheticals that practically seem infeasible.

Stefan’s system calls for secure hardware that doesn’t yet exist (we went through this before). And only works for physical devices, which is explicitly not the only system in the Senate’s crosshairs. And even with those limitations it’s *still* better than any other plan.

And it is the concrete distinction between data at rest & data in motion.

Are iCloud backups “data at rest” or “data in motion”?

Wait. What? Do you mean because of the China clause or do you mean in general? Because last I checked I thought they were (unless am misremembering some salient detail).

Yeah I mean I read the iOS security white paper and whatever other stuff Apple was generous enough to make public... so unless I am misremembering something and/or something changed (e.g. China’s request?)... iCloud stuff is encrypted. 🤔🤷‍♀️
