The romanization systems I've looked (Yale and Jyutping) both seem awful. Why can't there be a pinyin-type thing with six tonal marks? I assume there's some deep reason that prevented it
As a native English speaker Yale is remarkably comfortable for me. Then again, I spend four hours a day studying using it as a tool. Six tonal marks starts to reach information overload over one syllable—and requires custom fonts. Combining diacritics makes Yale painless.
I also think we ended up here because of path dependence regarding technology at the time. Moreover, tone shapes are too similar (three level tones, two rising tones) which makes the decision of how to represent them hard. Bad typesetting? Now you're insulting somebody.
