I believe that having the main locus of public discussion be a Hong Kong-specific forum not run by a large foreign tech company was one of the best technology decisions of the protests. That said, one such company (Cloudflare) plays a pivotal role in protecting against attacks

Another technology nonevent that has helped Hong Kongers is that the infrastructure is not in place to bring the territory within the Great Firewall. This has seriously narrowed repressive options for the government. The #1 rule of surveillance architecture is: leave it unbuilt

There's an unrelated reason that emergency measures to limit internet access weren't taken this summer, having to do with the consequences of such a measure on expats. But it really helped not to have a highly sophisticated filtering/censorship system in place and ready to go

I had in mind classic Facebook. WhatsApp is used but people could live without it. I'm unaware of any role Instagram plays in the protests, but that's likely due to me being uncool and not on insta
