Hong Kong could have three million people march and it wouldn't change the government's mind. The march today showed resolve, undiminished capacity, and the (somewhat incredible!) unity that continues to exist between the 'peaceful, rational' faction and the 'brave' group.

Frontline demonstrators showed up in full battle gear, assumed battle stations in front of an angry police line and then... just kind of backed off, changing back to street clothes and going home. You have to believe it was out of respect for the organizers' vision of this march.

For people who really want a head count, I don't think anyone in Hong Kong last year would have imagined we'd have enough photographic material for a comparative study of protest sizes in the 100k-2000k range. But we do.

The CHRF marches now really have a "brand identity": 1. A zillion people turn out 2. They are peaceful 3. People go home afterwards with no 'afterparty' 4. There's no property damage beyond spraypainting

In the earlier days of the protests, there used to be comprehensive trash collection done at these protests, as a gesture of respect. But now the relationship between people and the government has deteriorated too far.

Another interesting feature today was no MTR shenanigans. There were some reports of people getting stopped in automobiles this morning, but the train system stayed open, wasn't full of cops, and didn't shut down stations around the protest, a welcome return to the old ways.
