Americans have flimsy houses, and home renovation reality shows prove it. Try sledgehammering out a kitchen because it's a "gut job" in a 300-year-old European stone house and you would shatter your arms into powder. This is why I would like to watch "American renovator abroad"

FWIW house prices in the states are consequently far, far cheaper.

Yeah, regional variations can be brutal. Major US cities are particularly steep, but virtually everywhere else is far more affordable than (western if not all of) Europe. And it’s not just housing, but overall cost of living, and the salaries are much better too.

Wife and I really wanted to live abroad for a few years and travel Europe, but cost of living was ~20% higher (40% if we wanted the same amount of space that we have here) and the salaries (adjusting for healthcare, pension, taxes, etc) are 40-60% lower (in tech anyway).

Was it a question of costs or expectations? American living spaces are huge by European standards, so sometimes in the other direction people trip themselves up by not scaling down

Agreed, but like I mentioned, cost of living is 20% greater if we scaled down and 40% greater if we had the same amount of space. And I’m pretty sure anywhere I would go in Europe with more affordable CoL, I would take a corresponding hit on my salary.

Sorry, I misparsed your tweet and made you repeat yourself! It's kind of hard to talk about the Europe/US comparison since both are so vast. I wrote Pinboard living in the poorest county in Romania and my cost of living was not high :-)

No worries, and I agree about the vastness and difficulty in making meaningful comparisons. It’s entirely possible that I’m missing something as well. I would really like to learn more about and visit Romania!
