Americans have flimsy houses, and home renovation reality shows prove it. Try sledgehammering out a kitchen because it's a "gut job" in a 300-year-old European stone house and you would shatter your arms into powder. This is why I would like to watch "American renovator abroad"

Watch Chip and Jo Gaines discover that there is only one type of roof tile they are allowed to use due to historical heritage regulations, and it must be installed by the village mayor's brother, who also belongs to the Front National. Cash only, please.

The best international house shows are the ones where the couple from Kansas is trying to find a roomy, "child-safe" large house in Tokyo that has a big yard, three bathrooms, and is easy driving distance to work. I could watch those all day.

I wonder how many millions of Americans commute each day from an open-plan office to an open-concept home, both the product of 1990's fads that they had no say in and hate. And even if they get a door, it's a foam-core thing you can hear everything through. Mostly beeping.

And it's only getting worse. American houses since the 80s are made of paper, I say as someone whose house was built in 1995 and, by sheer coincidence, is currently getting 10 grand of work done on the eaves and gutters.

Europeans always wonder why Americans build cardboard houses while living in the middle of hurricanes (simplified view)

FWIW house prices in the states are consequently far, far cheaper.
