Police have approved a Sunday march by the Civil Human Rights Front, the first CHRF event since August 18 and the first march they've received a permit for since June. These have been the largest protests in Hong Kong, drawing up to 2 million participants (in a city of 7 million)https://twitter.com/sumlokkei/status/1202527942267396096 …

The leader of the CHRF, Jimmy Sham, was savagely beaten on October 16 by unknown assailants a few blocks from a major police station. He and a friend had been attacked in broad daylight on August 29 in a case that also remains unsolved.

My mistake, I said there had been no CHRF marches since June, but it was July 1 and 21 (thank you @y_n_y1!). The August 18 rally in Victoria Park did not receive police permission to march, but became a de facto march because of overwhelming numbers.

Police tactics since that August rally have been to foreclose peaceful rallies either by revoking permission mid-protest (like happened with the march on the US consulate on September 8), shutting down public transit, or firing tear gas unprovoked like happened last Sunday

I wrote a bit about what it was like to be at the CHRF rally in August https://idlewords.com/2019/08/a_week_with_no_tear_gas.htm …
