The point of putting article blurbs in front of a paywall is to entice you to subscribe and read the rest, but Niall Ferguson found a way to do the opposite. Given 124 words to work with, he found a way to make me never want to visit the Times again, for fear of reading morepic.twitter.com/IKoWhz2H4A

This blurb made me feel like I'm a dung beetle, because I have to carry thirty times my weight in bullshit

Dung beetles push massive amounts of shit uphill while steering by the light of the distant stars, and should therefore be the totem animal of the online writer https://blog.nationalgeographic.org/2013/01/24/dung-beetles-navigate-via-the-milky-way-first-known-in-animal-kingdom/ …

There's a full version of the article on the guy's website, and it's worth reading as a remarkable cautionary tale of how not to write about Hong Kong. This is possibly the least competent bit of parachute analysis I've seen on the crisis, and that's in a competitive fieldpic.twitter.com/RvMGUm7VRl

Checklist for parachute journalists in Hong Kong: * doesn't speak Cantonese * spends less than a week in Hong Kong * interviews other westerners * quotes Mao * dismisses protesters' five demands in favor of more esoteric, big picture explanation * cites airport, graffitti

I don't even care about edgelord stuff like bringing in Woody Allen or comparing Chinese and Japanese people to ants in a way that dares people to get upset. It's the pineapple-bun-and-butter errors, like declaring that the protests are finished a week before 380K people marchedpic.twitter.com/tp1XaF0mCW

The reason I reserve special ire for people like Ferguson and Brooks and even Thomas Friedman is that these were once intelligent people whose brains turned to tapioca through punditry without them apparently noticing. It's a terrifying fate to imagine for oneself.

Are (non-mainland) foreign journalists giving less sympathetic coverage to the protests than local media?

Hard to generalize, since the press in Hong Kong runs the full spectrum of views. But foreign media is making factual errors that would not pass the laugh test in Hong Kong.

i think all these are sort of "workable", but the one thing that gets me is a lack of humility. if you know you don't know stuff, and you accept that, that goes a long way.
