It's never been about gaining oil for ourselves. Military presence in the middle east is about controlling who can access that oil and when. I'm pretty sure that most oil consumed in the US has and will still come from Canada and Mexico, due to refining quirks.

I guess it depends what you want to pay for oil. A large portion of US production comes from shale oil (fracking) which has slowed down significantly since prices dropped to arround $50/barrel.

That won't last, unless someone's been sneakily producing giant coal-to-liquids conversion plants and plans to mine coal on a very large scale. Fracking isn't a magic source of gas.
