Kind of a fun phenomenon when technologies get objectively worse with time (something we're not used to!) is that it's synergistic with old person nostalgia. Young people assume it's 100% the latter, reducing the chance the better technology experience can ever be brought back

audio content too..recorded & mixed at higher and higher quality with better and better ADCs, but listened to compressed to very low sample rates, with generic phone DACs, then further compressed for the bluetooth buds you mentioned. & also increasingly no music collection owned.

The little gadget in the middle called Moenegallet or TAP-B26BK? Discontinued long ago. These super nifty folding plugs? https://imgur.com/a/UqRgsJ4  Also gone, without a trace. My favorite Revsharp shoes? Yup, those are gone too.pic.twitter.com/CHE0b6mshH

Blame the Interstate Commerce Commission in 1947, and the railroads for being too cheap to implement cab signals. Many 90MPH lines went away not long thereafter.https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?4,558684 …

I've been thinking about this a lot lately, and trying to understand what's happening. My first theory was that it's not old guy nostalgia, but instead that when I was young I had rose colored glasses about the pace of progress. But I don't think even that is true.

One possibility is basically "physics is a harsh mistress". The speed of light is fixed. Quantum mechanics makes more Moore's law doubling hard. It turns out moving ecosystems on the scale of global climate change takes a lot of energy and work; maybe more than we have.
