I've been thinking about this a lot lately, and trying to understand what's happening. My first theory was that it's not old guy nostalgia, but instead that when I was young I had rose colored glasses about the pace of progress. But I don't think even that is true.

One possibility is basically "physics is a harsh mistress". The speed of light is fixed. Quantum mechanics makes more Moore's law doubling hard. It turns out moving ecosystems on the scale of global climate change takes a lot of energy and work; maybe more than we have.
