Tonight is a rara avis in the Hong Kong protests, with three permitted events scheduled against each other. Two are in close proximity and will likely merge if this turns into a march on the US consulate up the hillpic.twitter.com/RlEdxfoyhs

Hey, is there an updated protest chant glossary? I'm six weeks out of date
Wouldn't be a Hong Kong protest without a clean, accessible, and safe public bathroom. Locals may not realize why I fixate on this. San Francisco understandspic.twitter.com/U8rcn46beQ
Now the same sort-of-cantonese-speaking Italian guy who was singing Sia covers yesterday is crooning some Italian ballad to a pretty baffled crowd. He did the US anthem firstpic.twitter.com/KA8reIRln7
Kind of an "open mic night at the student union" vibe to this rally (which is bilingual), but the crowd is hugepic.twitter.com/otwqUq76OD

Taped up instructions show people how to use Telegram and how to configure its privacy settings. There is a widespread misapprehension that the protesters are digital sophisticates living in the year 3000. They struggle with their online tools just like we do.pic.twitter.com/yAqAQMomXq
Looks like we'll have a major protest on 8 Dec. The election has served as a bizarre kind of reset button. On the one hand, the wound from PolyU is still wide open. On the other, HK is back to large public rallies with permits and no police presence whatsoever, like August. Weirdpic.twitter.com/FHfssH8jKN
I think the election results have given the government pause on further violent actions for now. These permitted rallies support that idea. There’s commentary that the new police chief’s doubling down at universities *helped* the elections. Not saying it’s a “win” though.
Yeah, just another unexpected turn in the road
