True story; Iong before I knew her, I edited - extremely indifferently - the attack piece that Global Times ran on my now-wife, @larsonchristina, after she wrote a very good article about them for Foreign Policy.

Anyway, the vast majority of my Global Times colleagues were smart, clever young people with mildly liberal leanings who really, really wanted to do good journalism but often lacked the training and the backing to do it, though achieved some very impressive things nevertheless.

That's led to genuine frustration and anger at the destruction of what space there was for real reporting and coverage in China in the last few years, including some quite high-level staff leaving for other sectors.
