A good mental metaphor for the state of online data security is the "dark warehouse". Burglars can break into the warehouse with a flashlight and take any specific thing they want, if they know where to look. They can't turn the lights on and search for stuff, or take it all.

Strong agree. All data that exists anywhere is asymptotically insecure. In the long term, it’s just a race between data breach and data loss.
