This is a beautiful thread about names. I will add that if you meet someone with what you think is an unusual or interesting name, the kindest thing you can do is not ask them about it. You'll be sparing them a canned conversation they're really tired of. They'll tell you later!https://twitter.com/random_walker/status/1199301468941160450 …

It also helps to go somewhere where your name is weird to people. Everyone's name is hard to pronounce somewhere, as my poor friend Wayne learned during a semester in Moscow.

I can't speak for other people, but you can ask me six thousand times to help you say my name right, and I will not get impatient or feel anything but surprised gratitude. I even recorded a podcast for people who want to learn to say it. https://idlewords.com/say_my_name.m4a

Sometimes when I get frustrated I try to remember that there was a major league baseball player named 'Gwóźdź', who had to run around playing an American game with that Polish name on his back. His nickname was "Eyechart". Makes no sense to me, it's a perfectly easy name.

I've stopped listening to podcasts because they made jokes about being unable to pronounce names of people who emailed questions in to the show. Good lord, just ask!
