I had the oddest feeling wandering around Hong Kong today, and then realized it was because I hadn't heard a single protest slogan. For one day, Hong Kong got to live as a free society. Nearly two and a half million have voted already, and the final turnout tonight may exceed 75%

Obviously, the city is not free. The students at PolyU are still trapped in a police cordon, the police themselves are still above the law, and these elections were local. But it is a intoxicating whiff of democracy in a place that has been fighting desperately for democracy.

My heart goes out to Hong Kongers for whom the last two weeks especially have been an emotional whipsaw. Whatever happens tomorrow, I hope today gave the brave people here a respite and a sense of hope.
