Having delved too far into the political process and seen that the 'grassroots funding' is just as artificial in some ways as spending out of pocket money is what has exasperated me, but it's hard to express. I agree that Bernie has broad popular support that is real.

In his defense, I do think there's a qualitative difference between spending $21 million that you raised from small dollar donors who support your platform and spending half again as much because you found it in the couch cushions and thought it might be fun to be president

The army of small donors didn't spontaneously come into being because of Bernie's great virtue. Similarly, I am sure Bloomberg eventually wants a small donor army of his own, for credibility.
