There are many documented cases of such abuse in police custody. There are also wild rumors, and in an atmosphere where half the city (according to polls) has zero trust in the police, no one has the legitimacy to debunk the false ones. Many of these kids fear they'd be killed!

People who are assaulted by police are told to go and report it... to the police, sometimes literally the same police station the abuse occurred in. This is why the demand for an independent inquiry has mobilized so much of the city, and why Carrie Lam's refusal is unconscionable

Worst case, we may never be able to see them again and someday they will end up floating in the sea or being tossed from a rooftop. And their deaths will be classified as "unsuspicious" by the police.
