At least three MTR stations (University, Sai Wan Ho, and Kwai Fong) are pre-emptively closed in Hong Kong this morning, as well as the light rail system in the northwest New Territories. Light rail in particular has borne the brunt of MTR closures since October 4pic.twitter.com/6gBkwWKl6u

Communities in the New Territories are very easy to isolate with transit closures. Here's what the Light Rail network looks like on the map. It's about a nine kilometer walk between the two loops, with high-density residential high rises in both.pic.twitter.com/pCWRfzcDjw

Sha Tin is another community that is linked to central Hong Kong only by MTR and road tunnel. I suppose you could walk there by scrambling over Lion Rock.pic.twitter.com/C1DOZUjtxH

So in terms of the geography of protest, there are two Hong Kongs. One is the central areas where in the worst case, public transit shutdowns will mean a long walk. The other is the collection of places that can be completely cut off from the city by road and MTR closures.

One place where repression measures have been successful is preventing another peaceful, multi-million person march from taking place. The last successful attempt was August 18. The popular will is undoubtedly there, but public transit has been weaponized against it.

People calling for an "end to violence in Hong Kong" should recognize this tactic and the fact that every avenue of peaceful public dissent in the city has been criminalized. Office workers are no more radical in HK than in your city, but they've been pushed to a radical place

I think of this as the "why are you hitting yourself?" model of protest. Beijing, through its proxies in the Hong Kong government, has closed off every avenue of legitimate dissent in Hong Kong. Having made all protest illegal, they complain that protesters are breaking the law.
