A series of articles outlining a problem, all timed to coincide with a massive and very specific policy push out of DoJ. That doesn’t seem like great, objective tech writing.

A better hypothesis: DoJ wants to scare the crap out of a bunch of tech companies, and these NYT authors went forward with a mandate to put pressure on them all — even the ones that are fully compliant.
