If you have stuff you value on Medium, it's important that you recognize its actual business model: whatever subsidized psychological journey of self-discovery Ev Williams is on. The existence of the site hinges on Ev's ability to keep investors believing in his changing visions.

You may recognize this as the same business model WeWork was on, which is why I say back up your stuff while you can.

How? What? That amount is huge... First question is, why does a blog engine(?) have to be profitable, or be out on the stock market in the first place? That's like saying people should make direct money off of being on a mailing list?
-
Blog *engines* don't have to be profitable to keep working. Plenty of open-source software has never seen a penny of profit and works as well today as it did 30 years ago. A massive data-hosting operation like that behind any large user-driven-content site, on the other hand...!

One day Google might decide that Blogger and Blogspot are no longer worth supporting. Even if you have your own domain and super cheap hosting, you might find the latest wordpress or drupal no longer works. This too shall pass.

FWIW, here's what I do: - write posts on my laptop - ALSO on my laptop, run http://gohugo.io (or http://jekyllrb.com in future?) to build static HTML - upload HTML to host It's a little laborious & could be streamlined. But my blog starts and STAYS in my control.
