Solidarity was completely crushed in 1981. There were four factors that led to its rebirth: 1. The military coup in '81 was fairly gentle 2. Gorbachev signaled he would not use force in eastern europe 3. The pope was Polish 4. The economy was in crisis None would apply in HK

I wondered all summer why the Hong Kong government didn't use the same strategy as the Polish government in 1981, which was to play good cop/bad cop with the Soviet Union. But China seems to lack the flexibility to give the HK government this much leeway

The degree to which the central government has helped the protests is striking. It would be hard to come up with a more unifying strategy than the one they chose
