The universe you appear to be arguing from (where scrappy political upstarts can get their message out through frugal online ads, against the more evil and better-funded forces that advertise in TV and on print) is not one I recognize. People's attention should not be cheap

The example you cited (small upstart campaign fundraising) is almost a classic one where you don't need political advertising at all. Candidates fundraise by going through long lists of names and calling/writing in person, as your inbox and mine testify
