One of the things that will make the 2020 election unbearable is that the campaigns need to go after a very small number (~9%) of persuadable voters in a very small number of key states, with a budget in the billions. Shed a tear for people living in those ad markets.

There's a fracture in this country that is going to get much worse, not heal, in 2020. The only question is whether the Democratic side can translate their slightly larger piece of it into an electoral college majority, and how much help the Grim Reaper will offer in the Senate

One idea that has great appeal to people on the left is "if we ran a true progressive candidate, all the disaffected nonvoters would turn out and reveal the revolutionary character of the country." That does not work. Turns out you really have to appeal to these weirdo undecideds

These people won't decide the election because there's no candidate or policy or message that can capture a large majority of them. The best you'll do is 65/35. The pursuit of these voters is likely to be so tortured as to deflate more enthusiastic supporters.
