This New York Times article on decreasing your digital tracking tells you to avoid Google while serving at least five different Google tracking scripts, part of an 8 megabyte cornucopia of tracking. Of course there is no disclosure of this profound conflict of interest.pic.twitter.com/FYrJArvjiD

The one piece of advice it leaves out—disabling javascript for the [*.]nytimes.domain—reduces this article's size by a factor of sixteen and makes it load super fast, even on a mobile device. Listening to the NYT on tracking is like following Cinnabon's advice on healthy eating.pic.twitter.com/CmnFtraacV

What I hate most about the "duck Google" advice is that it is profoundly dishonest. Google operates or outright owns a large portion of the internet's infrastructure. It's the de facto standards body for the web. We need to start regulating Google, not telling people to avoid it

If you're in Europe, for example, you literally can't opt out of Google tracking (under the GDPR) without using ReCaptcha, a service that makes users peform free image classification labor... for Google.

All I'm asking for right now, though, is for the New York Times to disclose its profound conflicts of interest (like when it runs a free editorial on privacy by the Google CEO on a "Privacy Project" page stuffed with surveillance scripts)

Hahaha, sim! Citei o caso do @nytimes na palestra que dei semana passada em Joinville. Eles escreveram um artigo comentando essa hipocrisia https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/18/opinion/data-privacy-tracking.html …

I don't get this complaint. Is it that there's a firewall between news and ads and that's hypocritical, or that the firewall isn't high enough so they deliberately omitted the suggestion to block *.nytimes.com.

The complaint is that they are reporting on companies they have a direct financial relationship with and not disclosing it, on a page that makes those companies money.
