In hindsight, Trump would be culturally rehabilitated as a bombastic but effective leader who knew how to use the bully pulpit of Twitter to move his agenda through the sclerotic legislature that is hamstringing President Whoever. He grew the economy and kept us out of war!

A contrarian "Trump was actually a good president" argument in the liberal press is such a powerful click magnet that I'm surprised we aren't seeing it already.

The continuing erosion of norms is concerning in that scenario. What will it take to return to them? How much of what was good governance practice will now need to be formally codified? I’m thinking in particular of the threshold for a president to declare a national emergency.

I don't think there's a way to return to previous norms. You can build up new ones, but I think of political norms like buildings—it's easier to build a new one than repair the ruins of an old one. That's why it's such a bitter process to watch them break down

The path forward is Federalism, with the states taking the lead. 50 laboratories of democracy!

I understand gridlock as a "fail-safe" design feature of the federal government. Little happens without sustained, overwhelming consensus. The US government often lags by decades on emerging trends: abolishing slavery, universal healthcare, Carbon pricing ... but also Fascism.

You put slavery on a list with healthcare and a gas tax

The problem is that there's no way to do anything about it. The solution is to do something dramatic. We need to push back against the idea that what we have is broken. The solution is that we push ourselves as a nation closer and closer to the ideals that we hold dear.
