Good take. 2001: A Space Odyssey was in the same genre, but it took itself very seriously. Still, both are great movies, and they’ve both had an enormous impact on world culture.

It was almost explicitly based on a lot of pulp sci-fi and westerns that were very familiar to audiences. It wasn't like it was completely knew. Nostalgia was a big reason for its success.

There were also points where it mocked the conventions of its source material more directly than Mel Brooks -- like the inept rescuers getting bailed out by the princess they were there to save.
