Issues of hazard aside, Gabbard was not defending this country, but participating in an American war of choice that Sanders himself opposed. It's disappointing to see him buying into the vainglorification of our military.

The point is people in the military sign up to serve their country no matter where the country tells them to go. The onus is on the country, i.e. you and me. She agreed to put her life on the line to the point where it's illegal for her to do anything else.
