It's also quite likely that sharing news through social networks is inherently toxic even without the ad model. What we've learned about disinformation and rumor networks is that the worst stuff spreads just fine even without financial incentive.

Yea that's more algorithmic. The fundamental flaw of engagement-based algorithms. Fear, divisiveness, and conspiracy theories are more engaging to attention's basic biology.
