Facebook's October FEC filing is in! On a day that Mark Zuckerberg told the world that his company stands for American values, we find out Facebook gave Steve Scalise, who has referred to himself as "David Duke without the baggage", $2,500 on September 27pic.twitter.com/peV4cxY45I

Mike Kelly claimed in public remarks in 2017 that Obama was running a "shadow government" to undermine Trump. He has compared the Environmental Protection Agency to terrorists. He's white but calls himself a "person of color" because white is a color. Facebook gave him $1,500pic.twitter.com/N5YYM4mPmc

Dan Sullivan opposes abortion, same-sex marriage, and despite being a senator from Alaska (the state seeing the greatest impact from climate change) denies that it is connected to human activity. Facebook gave him $2,500 on September 27pic.twitter.com/T0swHWrVTG

Cathy McMorriss Rodgers sponsored state legislation in Washington that would ban same-sex marriage, and as a congresswoman voted against the Equality Act this May. She supported Trump's Muslim ban in 2017. Facebook gave her $2,000 on September 27pic.twitter.com/8ParU2eL99

Doug Collins introduced the Asylum Reform and Border Protection Act, which would turn away asylum applicants at the border in violation of international treaty. He had Nancy Pelosi's words stricken as "unparliamentary" when she called Trump a racist. Facebook gave him $1,000.pic.twitter.com/49MFo6Z2Yz

Drew Ferguson is an Alabama congressman who voted against the Equality Act, believes abortion should be criminalized, and supported Trump's Muslim ban, and has been an enthusiastic proponent of a border wall. Facebook gave him $1,000 on September 27pic.twitter.com/RFuXmoVduL

Today Mark Zuckerberg said “Giving more people a voice gives power to the powerless and it pushes society to get better over time.” I would ask him how he reconciles Facebook's targeted political giving in support of the most rancid xenophobia with this idea.

Why is Facebook, with the power to affect national elections through even small changes to its platform, a site that will receive millions in advertising revenue from politicians in 2020, making its own political donations? Why is it allowed to do so? The situation is insane.

Apple doesn't make political donations. IBM doesn't make political donations. It's perfectly viable to be a giant American tech company without having a political action committee. Microsoft was forced to suspend theirs by employee pressure. Facebook employees could do the same.

I have no idea how Sheryl Sandberg in particular explains her political donations to the far Republican right through Facebook's PAC, given the very different nature of her personal political giving. And no reporter ever asks her.pic.twitter.com/r29zh2BWFt
