"12% of Americans, who make more than 6 round trips by air a year, are responsible for 2/3 of...aviation emissions." That means approx 39M Americans, 0.05% of the global population, produce 16% of the global carbon budget for 1.5C by their flying alone. https://twitter.com/HirokoTabuchi/status/1184864088331112453 …

Saying something is a “percentage of the 1.5 degree carbon budget” is a weird contortion of the data, and misleading. *Anything* — even the tiniest emitters — would be a huge fraction of that. How about looking at the actual emissions, where aviation is currently about 1.5-2%?

how about looking at the budget for how we save ourselves not the terrifying concentration pathway we're currently on? I'm sorry but my point and my math are sound.

Yeah, but I just think it’s a trick that people use to make small numbers look big. Very misleading. With this logic, food production would be >200% of our remaining carbon budget.

Yeah, this is deceptive. Aviation is not a major contributor to global warming, but you make it sound like just American frequent fliers are responsible for nearly a fifth of it.

Ok, even keeping a budget of 420 Gt: Assuming air travel continues to grow 32% per 5 years until 2050, then we get (31/5)1.32 * 0.918 * 24% * 31 years = 56 GtCO2, which gives us 13%. Calculating using a remaining budget of 340 Gt, elite US aviation becomes 16% of the budget.

What if making small numbers look big helps us realize how actually big the bigger numbers are? (I hope that makes sense?)
