A dynamic in Hong Kong that may not be visible from outside is that triads (or similar thugs) have become an extrajudicial enforcement arm for the HKPF. There have been multiple beatings, and you can see in the video below how they're investigated.https://twitter.com/ezracheungtoto/status/1184455766490542080 …

At one protest, I met a retired cop who told me he's lost his shit on July 21, the day the Hong Kong police let triad members beat up passengers at an MTR station without interference. He had spent his entire career fighting the triads. They were colluding with the sworn enemy!

The reason I'm so livid about Apple's http://hkmap.live ban is because this is the reality Hong Kongers are up against. The police aren't defenders of order; they're perpetrators of indiscriminate violence. And when they want real dirty work done, they call in criminals

There have been multiple such attacks on activists, legislators, and public figures in Hong Kong the past few months. They are highly targeted and deliberate. There have been no arrests made for these attacks, many of which took place in public places in broad daylight

Consider a thought experiment in which the Hong Kong police wanted to investigate these crimes in good faith. They can't leave their fortified police stations except in large groups, because they are so hated. They can't perform their sole duty, which is to protect the public.
