SHAME-FREE thread: ask the dumbest question you have about the Hong Kong protests. I'll try to answer it or loop in a real Hong Konger to answer it for you. No question too ignorant or basic.

How much do you feel geography of the city is playing a role in the success of the protests.

I have a whole blog post on that in the works! I think high density is extremely important at sustaining the protests now that transport is being shut down, and the way public spaces work in Hong Kong (many are privately owned malls) is idiosyncratic and very significant.

I know you spent time in rural north America too, do you feel it is possible to be as effective in that geography and low density?

The Hong Kong protests are very much a city protest, and they exist because there is no democratic outlet. I continue to thing political organizing is the way to go in the American heartland, and look forward to visiting

IMHO city-style protests are more problematic in US than HK bc of the level of violence allowed for US police, and the smaller numbers of protesters. Where I live, Portland, OR, suing the police & mayor is being tried. OTOH, in Ferguson, MO, someone has been murdering protesters.

Police have not fired on a US protest in decades, something you can't say for Hong Kong.

There have been isolated cases, but generally you’re correct. I guess US police prefer retail violence.
