There's no secret underground you need to be introduced to to witness the Hong Kong protests. Search twitter for 'hongkongprotests schedule' or follow your own ears. If you are frightened of the protests or police, you can always walk away to safety. Be careful of durian stands.

Hong Kong demonstrators in my experience want the world to see what's at stake, and have positive feelings towards people who come to show their support. I especially wish more Democratic legislators would visit the city; so far we've had Ted Cruz and Rick Scott.

It’s dirt cheap to visit now. And if you’re looking to do touristy things like theme parks or the peak, there are literally no lines for anything. You can get a better understanding of what’s going on AND have a good vacation

Wish I could agree unreservedly, but no, there needs to be a distinctive warning: If you are a family with kids, don't come! Police is shooting tear gas wildly around and you will need to be able to RUN to a safe spot, it won't be a casual walk. Given, you're joining a protest.
-
However, I agree with the rest: Yes, you will be welcomed most warmly by
#Hongkongers! Especially at the#Protests!
