One thing that may not be clear from outside of Hong Kong is what an ordeal getting to protests has become. It requires changing clothes en route, navigating a soft curfew by the MTR, avoiding police traps and tons of walking/improptu carpool/waiting for transport. This picture is perhaps most emblematic of the situation in Hong Kong. Before the 2019 protests, tear gas was an EVENT. (I want to be clear that the foregoing description applies to Hong Kongers. The police still treats white foreign observers as untouchable and it's a weird and uncomfortable double standard. But I don't want anyone to think I'm being brave)
