Hong Kong has been under a form of "curfew lite" with the first-ever systemwide closures of the city's subway system being used to limit movement. It will close at 8 PM today, closed at 6 PM last night, 9 PM Sunday, all of Saturday. The closings are pretextual and unnecessary.

MTR closings and limited service during the open periods are an effective way to create misery for average Hong Kongers. The government is hoping that this alienates the broad population from the protesters. The unelected government has approval ratings below 20%

Neither the MTR closures or the mask ban deter protest, but they do make it impossible to call the kind of 1-2 million person marches that demonstrate the government's lack of legitimacy. These were happening in defiance of police permit requirements and posed a political threat
