Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam rolled out her "listening sessions" with great fanfare last month. Nearly everyone who spoke at the first event (chosen by lot) demanded an independent inquest into police violence. Also worth pointing out that many of those at the listening session wore masks, which I suppose would now be illegal under the emergency law. Lam spent four hours after the event trapped at the venue, for fear of confronting about a dozen demonstrators waiting for her outside.
