Britain was grateful that China allowed the pretence of a dignified exit (some, google Fat Pang if you want more detail), while painfully aware that there was nothing they could do if China just walked in.

Those are all secondary. The most important thing is the Hong Kong people don't know how to deal with the relative decline of their status in the pecking order of Chinese speaking world. The rise of China is very disrupting indeed.
